Samuel Joseph Cohen started the Army and Navy Department Stores in 1919. Sam opened his first store at 44 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver with $10,000 worth of merchandise he had bought from a Kamloops store that was going out of business. In 1998, Sam's granddaughter, Jacqui Cohen, became President and CEO and the family owned company continued to thrive. With a new vision Jacqui opened a new store in Langley in 2001 and followed that up with a new store in Edmonton's Londonderry Mall in 2003. These new stores along with downtown Vancouver, New Westminster, Calgary and Edmonton's Whyte Avenue Store, have helped the Cohen family celebrate 92 years of being Canada's Original Discount Store.
