Old Strathcona Celebrates its Thespians

Did you know that in Canada, Edmonton has the most live theatres per capita? It’s true – and the area in Edmonton that has the most theatre companies in one area is Old Strathcona. We have over 10 theatre groups and various adhoc performances through the year.

What can you expect to see onstage? How about EVERYTHING? The Old Strathcona theatre scene is diverse, to put it mildly. We’ve got: a renowned live improvised soap opera; improv sketch comedy with no rules and no limits; a notorious Euro-style variety/game show (complete with cocktail sampling); provocative scripts; renowned local playwrights and directors; Western Canada’s longest running community theatre; brave retellings of Poe; and much more.

With all this theatre action going on, it’s no wonder that Old Strathcona is the district that gave birth to the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. A 10 day theatre extravaganza hosting over 130 individual productions, it’s considered the second largest Fringe Theatre festival in the world (just shy of Edinburgh).

On the other 346 days of the year, it seems like there’s always something happening onstage somewhere – theatre that opens your mind, theatre that hits your heart, theatre that makes you belly laugh. Honest. Our thespians do it all.
