SUMMARY:Art Book Basics: Publish your Own Art Book at The Paint Spot
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a story or idea that needs exploring in written form? Do you have a collection of artwork that you want to share with a wide audience? In this deep dive into the publishing industry\, participants will learn how to start their own publishing journey within the context of art books. Join visual artist\, author\, and founder of Wild Skies Press\, Alexis Marie Chute\, in a conversation about how to publish your own art book. Topics will include: \n• How to get started with your own book—what do you need to have ready?\n• How do you write text for an art book? How do you curate and order your book?\n• Improve your understanding of the various publishing routes: self-publishing\, hybrid publishing\, and traditional publishing. Which is right for you?\n• How do you translate the materials you already have—an artist statement\, an email list\, an active audience—into strong marketing materials for your new book? \nYou will leave this program with a deeper understanding of the publishing industry and where your artwork fits within this world. Alexis Marie Chute will be your guide into this exciting new phase of your career and will finish the evening with a Q&A period\, leaving no stone unturned. \nAbout the Instructor:\nAlexis Marie Chute is a creative powerhouse—a bestselling author and award-winning artist\, filmmaker\, photographer\, curator and publisher—whose work spans two decades. SUMMARY:The Paint Spot Presents: Unfinished Painting Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Is your goal is to get to your studio more in 2026? Then this challenge is made for you. \nEvery artist has at least one of those paintings: the one you can’t seem to finish. This is a great opportunity to get rid of those half-finished works cluttering your studio\, and while you’re at it\, get inspired by someone else’s half-finished work. You may decide to swap with another artist. After all\, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. \nHowever\, for the painting challenge day\, you can bring your own piece and finish it. We will take before and after images and then you can be part of the exhibition at The Paint Spot. \nWhen: Saturday\, January 3rd\, from 9 AM to 9 PM\nWhere: The Paint Spot\, 10032 81 Ave NW\nCost: FREE! \nThis is part of an ongoing painting exchange event running from mid-December to mid-February. Then all paintings will be collected and put on display at The Paint Spot from February 23 – April 23\, 2026. There will also be an online gallery of the before and after.

SUMMARY:The Paint Spot Presents: Pet Portrait in Pastel
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned artist David Shkolny for an engaging portrait painting workshop! Perfect for artists of all levels\, this class will guide you through essential techniques to bring your portraits to life. Submit your photo in advance or use one provided in class. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a celebrated instructor with over two decades of teaching experience. \nBeginning with a well-constructed sketch\, build up layers of colour to capture the light and textures of your pet. Following step-by-step instructions you will gain a great understanding of the key techniques you can take with you in the future. Please email studio@paintspot.ca before the class with your photo to ensure it has the right ingredients for a good portrait (photos will also be provided if you don’t have one). \nAbout the Instructor: \nDavid Shkolny grew up in Fort Saskatchewan\, Alberta. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1992). He has been teaching painting and drawing since 2001. David’s artwork is in collections across Europe and North America as well as the Canada Council. Recent public commissions include a painting for Fort Saskatchewan City Hall as well as a pastel for the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. \nSuggested Supplies: \n\nSet of good quality soft (chalk) pastels (Sennelier\, Schmincke are good brands) minimum of 24 (the more\, the better). It’s helpful to have a set of Nupastel in addition to the ones mentioned (they are harder\, but good for detail and blending). The cheaper sets will not have good colour adhesion.\nAugment the set with some good darks\, (almost black) like purple\, red and green\, as the palette will have more of the dark hues for much of the work.\nPastel Premier paper 12 x 16” in Italian Clay – 1-2 sheets\nSoft vine charcoal medium thickness (about ¼” diameter)\, not too skinny as they break easily and not too fat\nKneadable eraser\, 18″ ruler\, masking tape\, smooth drawing board around 14 x 18” (Masonite Panel works)\nSmall bottle of isopropyl alcohol (70-99%) and a couple of  flat brushes used for acrylic or oil in ¾” and ¼”\nApron (protects clothes from pastels)\, suitable art clothes\, snack\, drink\, and your own PPE (mask\, hand sanitizer)\n\nWhen: Saturday\, May 17th from 10 am to 4 pm\nWhere: Artelier\, 10045 81 Ave NW\, Edmonton (back alley entrance)\nCost: $80 + supply list per person \nClass limit is 15 students. Beginners welcome! \nYou will receive a 20% discount on all art supplies from your registration until the end of the class!
