Art Around Every Corner & On Every Wall

If there is one thing us zoomers know how to do, it’s finding the best spots for a pic. Murals are a beautiful backdrop for your latest Insta or just a great way to appreciate local art. Old Strathcona is full of 60+ murals to explore, and we’ve saved you the work of deciding where to start with our top three picks!

Laura’s Picks

Ghost Light

This piece may be small, but it is mighty. Just like me! I love how ominous and spooky it is, while also incorporating fun colours.

Artist: Haylee Fortin | Location: Backstage Theatre, 10330 84 Ave nw

Rado Alley

These little guys are so silly. I love how quirky this piece is and how it breaks the mold of other, more “serious”, pieces.

Artist: @harnackart | Location: Rado Alley, 107-108 Streets, alley north of 82 ave

Balance

I’m obsessed with the colours in this piece. Plus, the utilization of the doorway creates a great opportunity for unique poses. The mix of feminine and the occult is for sure my vibe!

Artist: Nathan Panousis | Location: Rado Alley, 107-108 Streets, alley north of 82 Ave

Diana’s Picks

Urban Wildlife

The connection between spirituality and urbanized glamour is beautiful. It gives a jazzy spark to the animals I see when going on a trip through the mountains of Alberta.

Artist: Trash Hectic Collective | Location: Back alley, 10158 82 Avenue

Green Forest Wall

I’m a nature lover, so seeing a mural with these tree figures and forest patterns excites me, really complementing the urban vibe of Whyte Ave well. A clean depiction of my favourite colour and setting: the green forest.

Artist: Jill Stanton | Location: 10431 82 Avenue

For the Sake of Paint

The play on colours and comic vibes reminds me of the comics I grew up with. It is an older mural, painted in 2015, and I appreciate the little imperfections from the wear of its years on Whyte.

Artist: Layla Folkmann and Lacey Jane Wilburn | Location: 8208 106 Street, Behind Varscona Hotel
