National Thrifting Day in Old Strathcona
Whoop! Whoop! On August 17, 2022 we celebrated National Thrifting Day, and a shopping spree around Whyte felt just right.
What is thrifting? You probably know, but it’s purchasing clothing, furniture, accessories and even home decor that is gently used or secondhand, at discounted prices. Which is good on the planet, and your wallet! So come with us as we explore all the best thrift, vintage, and consignment stores that Old Strathcona has to offer.
We started at Wrinkled Boutique with a great selection of chic & modern women’s clothing. They have a huuuuge mirror by the fitting rooms, so you don’t miss anything when trying on their cute clothes. Pro tip: check out their online store too! Right as you walk out the door, it’s easy to make a stop by their neighbor, Wildrose Vintage, with primarily graphic tees and vintage gear.
All successful shopping trips include snack breaks, right? We had to get one of the infamous Sugared and Spiced cookies – “girls night out” (which is definitely worth trying – it was SO good). A treat in between keeps you going, don’t you think?
Next stop: Plato’s Closet, which has various locations around Edmonton, and if you’re looking for either men’s or women’s clothing, they have it all. Nearby, Nu2You Consignment Boutique has high-end women’s clothing with brands Versace, Prada, Guess and more at great price points! It’s so satisfying when you catch something on sale and you can really feel the thrill of a good find that makes thrifting so much fun.
And last, but not least, Goodwill is always a go-to. In celebration of National Thrifting Day they hosted an amazing fashion show with volunteer models from Goodwill’s Career Connections program, which helps find jobs for folks with disabilities that may be a barrier to employment. They had the best energy when strutting their fits on the runway. Honestly, it was a highlight of the day – the perfect way to celebrate.
Some of these stores also offer consignment. So if you have clothes of your own you’d like to get rid of in the best way possible, this is a great option. The staff will price them and give you some money in return – win, win! Be sure to call ahead and ask how their process works since each store may have different policies around how they consign.
As you can tell, it’s a whole experience thrifting on the Ave. Not only are you finding fashionable items to amp up your wardrobe but there are all kinds of knickknacks that you can try out – like the retro arcade machine at The Flea. And IG-worthy spots for the perfect pic, like the fitting rooms at Wrinkled.
This day was a hit and we found a bunch of items in all sorts of styles to truly up our fashion game. Here is a look at all the places we mentioned and a few more so you can plan your next thrift adventure in Old Strathcona:
